Discover Volterra

Volterra is a small town of Etruscan origin renowned for its enchanting historical centre enclosed within ancient 13th century walls perched on a hill with six frescoed and panoramic entrance gates. This famous jewel thus appears, almost suspended between the hills of the Val di Cecina and Val d’Era (or Valdera), so much so that it has earned the nickname ‘the city of the wind’.

The earliest traces of Volterra’s Etruscan past can already be seen at the entrance to Porta all’Arco, the oldest and the only one that has remained largely intact with three-headed decorations dating back to the 5th century. Its upper part dates back to Roman times, while the side blocks were part of the ancient Etruscan city gate. Just outside the medieval walls, one can make a stop at the archaeological site of the Roman amphitheatre: one of the best preserved and most beautiful historical heritages in Italy. It was built in the 1st century AD over an older Etruscan site. The historical centre of Volterra unravels around the magnificent Piazza dei Priori surrounded by wonderful ancient buildings built in stone. Here is the Palazzo dei Priori, the oldest municipal palace in Tuscany. Today it houses part of the municipal offices, as well as temporary exhibitions.

Also in the square is the Palazzo Pretorio, which has a tower called the Torre del Porcellino (Tower of the Piglet) because of the characteristic stone pig positioned at the top of its crenellated peak.

The other sides of the square are occupied by the Cassa di Risparmio building, the 14th-century bishop’s palace and the rear part of the cathedral. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the main Catholic place of worship in Volterra, the mother church of the diocese of the same name. In November 1957, Pope Pius XII elevated it to the dignity of minor basilica.

While its side streets are full of restaurants and craft shops, particularly the characteristic alabaster shops.

If you decide to visit Volterra in July, you can also take part in the Volterra Teatro event, a cultural event that ranges from theatre to cinema, from poetry to dance, and on to workshops and exhibitions. On this occasion, the entire historic centre is transformed into a real stage under the stars. In October, the Volterragusto event is normally scheduled, starring the white truffle. There are also performances by flag-wavers, and tasting points for local products.
